Marino, 05 September 2004 – Paul Meijer impressed this weekend
during the eighth round of the European Formula Renault 2000 Championship
by taking fourth and sixth. At the Imola circuit the Dutchman showed
his potential by exiting overtaking manoeuvres during the second
race. With this great result the young driver can add 26 points
to his total.
With
third position during the first qualifying session, Paul Meijer
already had a good starting position for the 14-lap race. The Bilthoven
based driver drove a consistent race and finished fourth. Meijer’s
best time of the second qualifying session was cancelled by the
organisation after he had been pushed back on the track by helpful
officials. The Nikon Motorsport driver had to start from the back
of the grid in 23rd position. Paul Meijer showed he was not bothered
by this and overtook no less than 17 rivals to finish an excellent
sixth! His great performance on this track characterized by its
different heights the reigning Dutch Formula Renault champion has
a good change to finish in the top six of the championship with
only one race to go!
Paul:
“I am very happy with my two races at the Imola circuit. We
had the right pace all weekend. I already scored a very nice third
qualifying position during the first session which I unfortunetaly
could not turn into a podium finish. The second race I was forced
to start from the back of the grid because officials had pushed
me on the track again after I had spun. From start to finish it
was a hectic race. As I was slowly driving to my position on the
grid the race already started. Luckily for me, I reacted alert and
overtook several competitors at the start. After that I dived into
every gap I could find. During my overtaking actions I even touched
some rivals but I always managed to get ahead. In the end I finished
sixth. This exihilarating race gives me lots of confidence and I
will try to extend this positive line during the final race for
the European Championship at Oschersleben!
