During the fourth round of the Formula BMW ADAC Championship
Series this weekend at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz, Chris van der Drift
didnt have the luck on his side. Both a top three qualifier
and a fourth place in the second race were taken away from him by
the stewards of the meeting, due to unnoticed signals which were
given by the race-directors.
As
all contenders make use of the same chassis, engine, tyres and fuel,
the Formula BMW ADAC Series is a solid championship for young upcoming
drivers. Because all races are being held during prestigious Formula
1 or DTM events, a large amount of (media)attention is guaranteed.
Therefore this series offers an ideal opportunity for companies
or brands to present themselves on a international platform .
The
weekend at the 4.534 kilometer long track in former East Germany,
looks to start off good at first, when the 12-times go-kart champion
qualifies himself in third position for both races. His third grid
position for Race 01 however is taken away from him not much later
as it comes out that Vandy (among 25 other drivers) has set his
personal best laptime during a yellow flag situation on the circuit.
In the 12 lap race on Saturday afternoon, Van der drift shows again
his skills by overtaking six drivers which sees him climb up to
a respectable 6th position at the finish.
Race
02 also doesnt deliver the result which Kiwi hoped for. When
the telemetry of the race-directors show that Van der Drift made
a jumpstart, he is being called in for a stop-and-go pena lty. Vandy,
who at that moment is in a tough fight with Brazilian driver Atila
Abreu for third, misses the pitbord and therefore is being disqualified
after the race.
Van
der Drift: Its extremely annoying that I missed out
on two good results because of mistakes of my own. As much as I
regret the situation, this is a part of my learning curve. If I
look back in a more positive way, than I have to say that Im
very happy we were pretty competitive here all weekend. At the next
event (Norisring, June 25-27) Ill definitely try to put things
back in the right place!
